Double herring fishing: “Death sentence”
SVD 2024-10-22
Criticism is heavy when the herring quota is doubled in the central Baltic Sea next year.
– The ocean is collapsing, warns former environment minister Isabella Lövin (MP). Wiktor Nummelin/TT
Herring quotas will be increased next year in the central Baltic Sea, the Bothnian Sea, the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Riga. The sprat quota will be reduced – but not as much as the European Commission had proposed.
Everything is now decided by EU fisheries ministers.
Comment by the Baltic Sea Treaty Foundation – New measures needed!
Despite strong public opinion urging caution when deciding on next year’s herring quotas, the Council of Ministers has decided on a substantial increase.
And despite the fact that a large number of scientists and organizations have called for the herring stock to be allowed to recover and coastal and recreational fishermen report a shortage of herring, the decision to raise the price has been taken, which could have very serious consequences for the entire Baltic Sea ecosystem, where herring plays an important role.
Our work on this issue continues. We will analyze the decision carefully and then decide on our next course of action.
If you want to protect the Baltic Sea ecosystem and future fisheries like we do – sign the Baltic Sea Contract and share it with your family and friends.
