Wiktor Nummelin\/TT <\/p>\n<p>Herring quotas will be increased next year in the central Baltic Sea, the Bothnian Sea, the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Riga. The sprat quota will be reduced &#8211; but not as much as the European Commission had proposed. <\/p>\n<p>Everything is now decided by EU fisheries ministers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ccdf6a9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ccdf6a9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Comment by the Baltic Sea Treaty Foundation &#8211; New measures needed!<\/p>\n<p>Despite strong public opinion urging caution when deciding on next year&#8217;s herring quotas, the Council of Ministers has decided on a substantial increase.<\/p>\n<p>And despite the fact that a large number of scientists and organizations have called for the herring stock to be allowed to recover and coastal and recreational fishermen report a shortage of herring, the decision to raise the price has been taken, which could have very serious consequences for the entire Baltic Sea ecosystem, where herring plays an important role.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-70672f4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"70672f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Our work on this issue continues.
